What Is a Chemical Peel?

Who is not a good candidate for a chemical peel?
The procedure is NOT recommended for individuals with infections, active skin disease, cut or broken skin, sunburns or active Herpes Simplex I Sores. Additionally clients who are pregnant or nursing, have taken Accutane in the past 6 months, have psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis or have used Retin A in the last 48 hours are not able to chemical peels.
What Is the Difference Between a Chemical Peel and a Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a manual instrument that usually uses either a crystal or a diamond tip to exfoliate the top dead layers of the skin. A medical grade chemical peel is able to penetrates much deeper into the skin. By address the root of the pigment and also stimulating collagen production, a single chemical peel can provide the results comparable to 5 microdermabrasion. The effects from a milder medical grade chemical peel in Miami would be similar to three microdermabrasion treatments.
Which chemical peel should I choose?

How many chemical peels will I need?
The amount of treatments needed depends on several factors such as the condition of the skin and the straight of the solution. Avalon Medical Spa usually recommends a series of two to three peels for the best results. Our darker skin clients usually require additional treatment at lower strength solutions to prevent the risk of hyper-pigmentation.
What areas of the body can be treated with a chemical peel?
Chemical peels can be performed on any area of the body, including face, chest, neck, hands, arms or back. Some of our peels are designed especially for clients who suffer from back acne!
What Should I Expect During Treatment?
The skin is thoroughly cleansed prior to applying the chemical solution. The solution is usually applied with a cotton swab and patients report feeling a burning and tingling sensation. Based on the reaction of the skin and patient feed back two or three more layers of the solution could be applied. Avalon Medical Spa provides our clients with a personal hand held fan or a cooling globe to ensure comfort during the treatment. Some solutions could be left on the skin until the following morning while some are neutralized during your appointment. But don’t stress to much, our medical aestheticians will ensure you know the proper after care instructions for your medical grade chemical peel in Miami. Once the treatment is complete, a physical sun block with Titanium Oxide and Zink is applied on the skin.
Please advice us of any allergies – especially to Aspirin – or any other medications you are taking prior to the procedure.
What Is the Recovery Like?
The first day:
Immediately after the procedure some clients may have a “white/chalky” tint to their skin. This usually subsides on its own within 30 minutes and you will be able are able to return to your regular activities.
The second day:
The skin looks darker, more like a tan and can start feeling a little course to the touch. Please do not moisturize your skin until the peeling begins.
The third day and following:
Usually by the third day the peeling process starts and lasts for about 2-3 days. The skin peels around the nose and chin area and moves outwards toward the ears and hair line. Depending on the type of peel you received, your skin may look like you’re either having a light peel from a sun burn or you’re actually shedding off skin! DO NOT PICK OR PEEL AT THE SKIN – THIS CAN CAUSE PERMANENT SCARRING AND PIGMENTATION.
How can I take care of my skin during the peeling process?
Avalon Medical Spa recommends using a warm wash cloth to gently exfoliate the skin. The new “baby” skin that is revealed does not have any layers of protection and use of sunblock is strongly advised to avoid sun damage. Clients are also advised from participating in any outdoor activities that may expose them to prolonged sunlight – such as tanning, golf, boat trips ect. for about two weeks.
An average recovery time takes about 7-10 days. Once the skin is peeled off, please remember, SPF is your BFF!
Are there any risks with chemical peels?
Chemicals peels can permanently scar your skin and cause hyper pigmentation and hypo pigmentation. The majority of complications can be easily avoided by following the after care instructions and not picking and peeling away the dead skin. If the skin underneath is not fully healed or ready, you can give your scar.
