What causes acne?
Acne outbreaks can occur at any age. Normal changes during adolescence cause the enlargement and obstruction of the sebaceous glands causing the first onset of acne. Even though many of us over come the teenage break outs, we can still experience an abnormal proliferation of the p-acne bacteria (propionibacterium acnes). This typically causes painful, inflamed lesions that can appear on the face, chest, back, limbs and virtually any other part of the body. Many different factors such as hormones, access oil production, stress, diet and genetics can contribute to acne break outs.
What is the best acne treatment?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a great new alternative treatment for acne. Especially when traditional methods such as antibiotics have failed. PDT controls resistant, hard-to-treat active acne by combining light and a special light-activated solution that targets and destroys acne activity. PDT also diminishes older acne scars leaving your skin healthy and smooth. No wonder its the best acne treatment in Miami!
What is Photodynamic Therapy and what does it treat?
Photodynamic Therapy uses a special topical photosensitizing agent called Levulinic Acid. PDT is one of the best treatments for moderate to severe acne, actinic keratosis (superficial cancer cells), rosacea, sun damage, cosmetic skin improvement, oily skin, enlarged sebaceous glands, wrinkles, warts and psoriasis.
How does PDT acne treatment work?
Acne needs oil in order to survie. P acne bacteria also produces porphyrins as part of its normal life cycle and metabolism. A high intensity blue-violet/red light laser light activates these porphyrins in the sebaceous gland. Once the porphyrins are activated, they effectively and permanently kill acne causing bacteria. Once the acne bacteria is gone you can finally enjoy the clear, acne free skin you have always wanted!
What laser is used during PDT acne treatment?
There are two very effective modalities that can activate the Levuan acid. IPL Photofacial Photodynamic Therapy and Blue Light Photodynamic therapy both provide amazing results. Our experience in successfully treating different types of acne and acne scars have led us to agree with the experts. IPL Photofacial is the most effective laser in acne treatment procedures in Miami. On top of treating acne, IPL Photofacial is the ONLY laser that can also treat enlarged capillaries, telangiectasia, freckles, enlarged pores, enlarged oil glands, hyper pigmentation, liver spots and uneven skin tones.
What should I expect during my PDT acne treatment?
The laser specialist will cleanse your skin and will apply the Levulan to the skin. The solution is left to incubate for 15-60 minutes on the skin depending on your skin tone. The levulan is absorbed by the sebaceous gland, which is where the acne problem originates. The laser is then used to activate the acid which would reduce the size and activity of the sebaceous oil gland. By drastically reducing the amount of oil your sebaceous glad produces, the acne bacteria will no longer have anything to feed on. This treatment will also stimulate collagen production and decrease pore size.
Is PDT acne treatment painful?
This procedure does carry some mild discomfort, such as that of a regular IPL Photofacial treatment. However, it is usually very well tolerated by both men and women.
What areas can I treat with PDT acne treatment?
Avalon Medical Spa recommends that all of our clients who are interested in PDT acne treatment in Miami schedule a complimentary consultation. Although the face is one of the most common areas to experience acne, the chest, back, arms, legs and bikini area and underarms also respond extremely well to Photodynamic Therapy.
Incubation time may vary from 15 minutes and for up to 3 hours. Thicker skin such as the skin on the back, legs, chest or arms usually require a longer incubation time. Since PDT acne treatment does require some downtime, Avalon Medical Spa may recommend a shorter incubation time. This may diminish and prolong the results but also decrease the downtime and discomfort.
Am I a good candidate for PDT acne treatment?
Photodynamic Therapy with Levulan is ideal for most patients skin types I-IV. These skin types usually range from pale caucasian, darker European, lighter Hispanics and lighter Asians skin tones.
Who is not a good candidate for PDT acne treatment?
Clients with darker skin tones (V, VI) such as those of South Asian descent, darker Hispanics and African American and tan skin are not suitable for acne treatment with photodynamic therapy. Avalon Medical Spa recommends that clients with darker skin tones seek PDT therapy activated with a blue light.
Clients who are using certain medications and antibiotics that incase the photosensitivity of the skin are not able to undergo laser treatments. Women who are nursing or pregnant are also advised to abstain from chemicals or any light laser therapy.
How many acne treatments with PDT will I need?
The amount of treatments needed depends on the severity of your acne and your preference of the length of the downtime. The longer the solutions incubates, the longer the recovery time, but the greater the results! Avalon Medical Spa recommends a series of two to three treatments once a month. Although rare, clients with severe and persistent acne may require up to six treatments to destroy the acne bacteria.
Are the results with PDT acne treatment permanent?
Once you achieve clear skin after PDT acne treatment, your skin will stay clear for a prolonged period of time. For some clients who’s acne is caused by a hormonal imbalance, some maintenance treatments may be required every six months to a year.
How do I prepare for my PDT acne treatment?
To achieve the best result with photodynamic therapy, Avalon Medical Spa recommends a deep cleansing facial or a microdermabrasion prior to your first appointment. The facial will manually extract acne pustules, black heads and debris. This would allow the Levulan solution to penetrate deeper into the skin. Sun exposure is also not recommended at least two to four weeks prior to appointment to avoid any complications.
What is the recovery like after PDT acne treatment?
All great things require some sacrifice. Achieving clear skin that you have always dreamed of would require you to take some time off work to allow yourself to heal. Good news is that the downtime with PDT can be customized based on your schedule, preference and ability to stay indoors. During the first two days after the treatment, the skin may become darker and start peeling and flacking off. This may last for up to 7-10 days. The skin may look crusty, flake or resemble and even resemble a scratch. Areas that become crusted are considered to be pre-cancerous areas that have been successfully treated! Some crusting all over is expected, so don’t be alarmed. After a week the skin may still be slightly red which could be easily covered up with make up. Sensitivity to light may persist for a couple of weeks, so don’t forget SPF is your BFF!
What are the risks with PDT Acne Treatment and can I prevent them?
The major complications of any laser treatment include burns, blisters, hyper – pigmentation and hypo – pigmentation. Exposure to the sun or bright indoor lights during the first 48 hours may produce uneven dark pigmentation and blistering. Clients are advised to avoid any activities that may elevate their body temperature such as saunas, steam rooms, hot showers, baths and exercise.
